Progress Evaluation over Easter Break

My main aim for my work over the break was to push the design development of overall structure and creating particular spaces intended for private or public functions (such as therapy/ counselling rooms and social spaces for members of the public to relax and interact). From the HATS workshop, I decided to develop more irregular shaped structures that connected with each other. I thought that the movement of wax inside a lava lamp would be an excellent way to find these forms. I photographed and drew my own lamp, studying the way the wax blobs interacted with each other and created a simple digital collage, illustrating my concept. I then drew a plan and elevation based on my visual, showing the layout in the site. My analysis of the lava lamp shapes worked very well because what I produced enhanced the initial concept and resulted in a more connected and fluid structure.

During this, I came across images of cornstarch and water mixtures ‘dancing’ on a speaker playing music. I found these shapes really intriguing because of how they changed as the music played. Unfortunately, I couldn’t recreate the experiment myself, so I took screenshots from a video on Youtube and created drawings from them. I really like how the drawings look, particularly because of how the mixture folds and curves. The only thing that may be an issue is how the forms will translate into a structure.

The final thing I did is create a clay model based on these forms to develop this idea in 3D. I thought they represent the cornstarch forms well but I really need to figure out how it will look from all sides. I want to try vacuum forming this model with coloured plastic to see how it looks, but I need to discuss this with the technicians first.

Overall I thought this week went well, although I really need to get the opinions of my peers and tutors to see if this is going to work for my project.
